When people first think of newborn photography they often think of classic studio images. Tiny babies, just days or weeks old, swaddled in adorable wraps and dressed in cute outfits with poses to match. Truth is, I used to take these types of photos and am capable of still doing so, but as my love for birth photography grew I began to ask myself why. Why was I so drawn to documenting birth stories and less drawn to the newborn sessions I once loved so much? It all came down to emotion. Raw emotion.
Babies belong in the arms of their loved ones, being fed, bathed and loved on. With most of their time as a newborn being spent this way, why do we not focus on capturing more of this? I wasn’t sure but I wanted to make sure that I was offering everything I could to make sure that these moments were documented for families to remember. A move from Alaska to Vermont made the decision final, as I sold most of my studio equipment and props and began to venture into documentary newborn sessions.
So what can you expect when you book one of these sessions? Expect just another day with your little one! I will be there to capture the feedings, baths, smiles and spit-ups as they happen. I may direct your family to different activities or areas of the home as needed, but mainly I am there to capture life as it unfolds. The best part? These are documentary sessions! So let older siblings interact naturally with your new addition, don’t worry about the toys on the floor and remember, this is meant to document life as you lived it with the newest member of your family.
